The big surprise in Zion (& Grand Canyon)

Somewhere along the way we started a playlist of songs for our road trip. Anyone going on a road trip and interested, I can share this collection of all over the map songs in terms of genre... ha! Jeremy also decided it would be fun to start each morning blaring a little Willie Nelson's On the Road Again full on with his own dance routine to the every morning jam. I really should video this but pretty sure it's burned into all of our memories and maybe best to just leave it that way. The boys "enjoy" waking up to this each morning and it usually turns to a lot of laughter. This may be our new routine at home for wake up...

We headed out of Salt Lake City to southern Utah in the Zion area. The landscape here is so hard to describe. Brilliant colors, jagged mountains and hills in all different shapes and sizes, just something unimaginable. And this goes on for miles and miles. We arrived to our campsite outside of Zion National Park on Tuesday and just spent some pool time and I had the exciting task of doing laundry. Actually, this probably sounds crazy but it was kind of a peaceful experience to sit for about two hours and read by myself (no signal or I would have been updating the blog, LOL) in the campsite laundry facility. I almost went back to the rv and got more things to launder just because.... okay not really.

But back to the big surprise, the boys had no idea that Uncle Cap was going to meet up with us that night! He left Ventura late afternoon so didn't arrive until almost 1 am. Jake sort of woke up and was super confused with a big hug from Uncle Cap in the middle of the night! He woke up the next morning and Cap had stepped outside so for a few minutes he thought he had dreamed the whole thing. Bryce woke up as Cap walked back into the rv in the morning and just laid there dumbfounded for a few seconds! Very fun surprise!!

We put Zion tours on hold and headed out to the Grand Canyon first. Although we thought the glass bridge would have been cool to see, it's on the southwest side of the Grand Canyon and was going to be a 4+ hour drive over there one way. We chose the 2.5 hour drive to the North Rim and were not disappointed. Wow, just wow. That is one HUGE hole in the ground! :) We did a couple of hikes around the Visitor Center and Lodge on the North Rim. The one thing that was surprising to all of us was the amount of vegetation both on the way there and actually at the North Rim. "Isn't this supposed to be the desert?" was commented more than once on our drive there. Instead of driving through miles and miles of sand and barren ground, we drove through forests. It was wild!

Our view from right in front of our parking spot at the Visitor Center and Lodge!

so cool... and it just goes on forever it seems!

These guys were so excited to have their Uncle Cap with them!

Checkin' out the views... and the big drop offs

Even though Cap and Jake are shadows in this picture, I thought it looked neat. This was a little room with big windows cut out and a bench that you could walk up steps from the hiking trail on the back side of the Lodge.

I was so thankful for the rails in this area. The drop-offs were incredible. And scary for this height fearing mom!

After the Grand Canyon Lodge area and a nice long hike with no complaining from the 9 and 7 year olds..... said no one ever..... we drove over to Point Imperial. We didn't think it was possible, but the views here were even better than what we saw by the Lodge. And again, note all of the green???

Grand Canyon was a success and so glad Cap was able to enjoy it with us!
